Running to Save Lives!

Dear family & friends,
I have about two months to go before the San Antonio 1/2 marathon and I am starting to feel like a runner again. Well, maybe not a runner, but at least I think I can finish! :) Thank you to everyone who has already donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I have been overwhelmed by everyone's generosity!

For those who don't know, I am raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a participant in their Team in Training program. I'm training in memory of my college friend Sasha and I hope you'll join me by making a donation to my fundraising campaign. My personal goal is to raise $2,100 and I only need an additional 15 people to donate $100 to make that goal.

Please use the link in this email to donate online quickly and securely plus learn more about my progress (and see a photo of Sasha and me.) You will receive a confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation.

http://pages.teamintraining.org/uny/rnrsahlf08/abegor

Each donation helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. More than 823,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. I am hoping that my participation in Team in Training will help bring them hope and support.

On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, thank you very much for your support. I greatly appreciate your generosity. I hope everyone is having a great fall!

Best,
Alison Begor

P.S. I would appreciate it if you would forward this email to as many people as you can to encourage them to donate as well. Thanks again.

2008 After Work Ski Program

Hi Everyone!

It’s almost that time of year for snow sports! Or at least to start thinking about it with your friends and family! I just received the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort Package for the 2008 After Work Ski Program on Tuesday Nights. We typically left at 5pm and got to the mountain at 5:45pm.

The program would start on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 from 6-10pm with the lessons at 8pm. (lesson start time can be changed after the first lesson, with the consensus of your other classmates) The package includes 6 weeks of 1 hour group lessons, plus up to 3 hrs of additional hours of skiing or riding for $130 if we pay before November 7, 2008. After that it would be $140. (last year what we all noticed is that the lift passes were marked for January thru March.)

Rental prices are as follows: Skis - $15 per week, snowboard - $20 per week, keep in mind that this does not include the price for renting the boots.

Please e-mail me by October 31st if you are interested, this is 2 months out but I will send a reminder when it gets closer to the date.

Thanks!

Ultimate Frisbee

If any of you ladies are interested in some fun exercise, I am involved in a pick-up Women's Ultimate Frisbee League every Wednesday. We play in the circle at SUNY Albany at 6:00 until dusk. As it gets darker we may move the location to RPI so we can play under lights.

This league is geared for beginners to advanced. I had never played Ultimate Frisbee when I first started, and the people there gave me all the information I needed. We even do drills to help learn the skills. The league is geared for women, but men can come play, if they wear a skirt and are ready for fun.

Alpha Phi Alumnae Volunteers/Gardeners needed 8/24

Hello Sisters!
We need your help to kick-start the school year for the Theata Tau chapter and get it ready for rush! This Sunday we are holding the first ever (as far as I know) Alumnae-Sister Gardening Extravaganza! Both Sisters and Alumnae will help clear the flower beds of weeds and then plant new flowers and spread mulch. We will also be doing the shopping for the event that day. By helping out we can get the house looking great for when rush starts next week!
The event starts at 11:00 and should go no later than 2:30. Even if you can just come for part of the time it would be a big help. Also, the house does not have it's own gardening tools, so we really need Alumnae to bring some tools we can use that day. If you can't make it, but have gardening tools we could use let me know, and maybe we can arrange to pick them up.
Lots of people (including lots of sisters) have requested more Local Alumnae/Sister events, and I think this will be a fun one to start of the year. Please join us if you can! Also, please pass this on to any other local alumnae I don't have e-mail for.
Thanks and AOE,
Jessica Reichard

Alumnae Events

Sorry, It's been a really busy summer ladies! I will be starting the monthly Happy Hours again, slowly but surely.

Switchback Sea

Swimming cities of Switchback Sea is a flotilla of seven intricately hand crafted vessels that will navigate the stretch of the Hudson River between Troy and the New York harbor this August 15th - September 7th. Imagined as a hybrid between boats and bits of land mass broken off and headed out to sea, the Switchback vessels will make stops in towns along the river bringing performances and music. Over the course of three weeks they will make their way toward their home port - an invented landscape tucked into a niche along the East River in Long Island City, Queens.

The Swimming Cities is designed and organized by printmaker and installation artist Swoon. Collaborators include playwright Lisa D’Amour, the band Dark Dark Dark and circus composer Sxip Shirey. Propulsion systems brought by John Rinaldi and Kinetic Steam Works. Boat design and carpentry created in close collaboration with Jeff Stark, Iris Lasson, and The Floating Neutrinos. This is Swoon’s second major installation with Deitch Projects.

Swimming Cities Press Release

This sounds interesting/intriguing & it's free.

Fri night in Troy, Sat evening in Albany

One of the performances is even at the Saugerties Lighthouse.

Visit www.switchbacksea.org to learn more about this piece.

The performance is free and appropriate for all ages.

SUNY Albany Facilitator Volunteer Needed

Ladies,
The Executive Office is still looking for a volunteer to facilitate
SUNY Albany chapter's based intiative for the Leadership
Initiative. I do this for the SUNY Plattsburgh chapter and have had
a great experience with it. To learn more about this program, you
can go to
http://www.alphaphi.org/Leadership%5FInitiative/

Each chapter does 4 sessions a school year, each session about 2
hours a piece, you schedule them with the chapter according to your
and their schedules. Its really not a huge time commitment and its
pretty fun!

If you have any questions about facilitating, please feel free to
contact me directly at drm1731@hotmail.com.

If you are interested in doing this for SUNY Albany, please contact
Stefania Rudd at srudd@alphaphi.org. The chapter is really missing
out by not having a facilitator!!!

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all-
